To the unknowing outsider France looks relatively unscathed. They appear to have a strong, central government and Axiom favour is blatant; afterall, their president is a member of the elite group and a European branch is located where Disney Paris once was (the rides have become a training ground). However, this is a facade. The country is, to put it mildly, in the toilets. Impoverished, tyrannical, and oppressive, France is devolving into a heady world of crime. While natural disasters did not grip the nation, their response to the virus was the forced removal of all immigrants. International outcry from 2008 on led to France breaking from the EU and retreating into isolation, a ban on all non-essential travel in and out of France enacted. In thanks to this, the crime wave of 2012 missed them at first; however, citizen unrest over their heavy-handed treatment of "mutants" and government control (people barred from not just travelling in and out of the country, but also communicating; ie, no internets) led to an uprising in 2013 with "mutants" and like-minded citizens storming the Palais de l'Élysée. Within days of seizing control, they instated sweeping reforms, such as reopening the borders and immigration, and they actively courted the world they'd turned their back on. This unrestricted travel and mutant-ran country led to a wave of displaced individuals, which has drove the country into the ground. The economy is at a flatline and the once beautiful city of Paris is essentially one big slum -- however, it's a thriving metropolis still. The government has also passed twenty years of pro-mutant legislation, limiting the rights of "normal" people. This has led to a huge international black market in France where people pay sorcerers and enchanters to make them appear "special" so they can claim benefits and survive within the corrupt regime of mutant control. Their current president is a winner of the competition and a member of Axiom.

I was thinking it's a bit like a police state, wherein mutants and such get all the power, and the normal people are reduced to nothing. But it's still thriving! What do you think?

jfjgdjkg fskjg szjfbdsjbj MY MIND = BLOWN, THAT IS SO AWESOME. i think that's fantastic, perfect, flawless etc. i'm not really sure that i have anything to add other than a+, awesome! unless you wanted more ideas in which case i can sit down and brainstorm out, but i love what you've done. france being in the shithole after everything is too much fun. how are you relating your character to all of it?

Hkhouroueowu THANK YOU. I'M GLAD YOU LIKE IT. If you've played FF7, I envision it a bit like Midgar, right?! IF THAT MAKES SENSE. The countryside is still fairly untouched, but the big cities -- Paris, Marseilles, Lyon -- are just these sprawling towns of the exceedingly rich and the horrifically poor. I'm mostly keen on making it a very pro-"special" country. PLUS I LOVE COUNTRIES BEING IN THE SHITHOLE! Didi and your Chris can commiserate over how awful France is while everyone is like OMG FRANCE HAS IT SO RIGHT.

Didi's mum is from the Ivory Coast and was almost forcibly deported except her boyfriend, a champion Fencer, married her. He ended up dumping his entire savings into keeping her in France. His power, really, is he has three enchanted swords that fight for him (well, fence). His father paid someone to enchant them so Didi could have a shot at a "good" life as the country spirals more and more toward reducing the rights of "normal" citizens to naught. It means they're kind of wonky and sometimes they attack him or fight each other. He loves the world, though, and he's so in love with every little bit of wonderment. He's a huge, huge geek and he'll try SO HARD for your guy to be his little brother :X

yessss that makes complete sense! i know what you mean. LOL shithole countries = my favourite, so yes pls. i love the idea of it being very pro-special and it NOT being a fantastic awesome thing. and yes! commiseration will happen.

omg i love your concept, didi sounds BEYOND awesome and i love his swords! my chris (i think i'm calling him etienne but that maaay be subject to change) is technically like 600+ years old since he used to be a gargoyle on the notre dame (if my concept is approved). but he spent the majority of that time thinking about pigeons and the rest wishing to come a real boy. and he hasn't been human for long, so he's definitely younger brother material! except he thinks he's top shit and is the prettiest/most fashionable/most superior of them all, but there'll be a special place in his cold, stony, selfish heart for didi. even if he'll never admit it. because frenchies have to stick together!

yes! i wanted to play on the ideas of the french revolution and a backward slide into how maybe the new world isn't wonderful, abuse of power, etc; and it does give a lush background for them to exist in especially since etienne has seen france through, what, 600+ years of history! omg just think of how these changes will look to him!

I LOVE ETIENNE'S CONCEPT SO MUCH. I straight up irl lolled at the line about pigeons. the nice thing about didi, is eti can think he is top shit and the prettiest/most fashionable/most superior and he will let him and be totally patient about it, if not encouraging. he will even let eti dress him before battles and advise on his manscarves.

hi hello ij welcome back. yes! i definitely got a french rev vibe from it. abuse of power is the best. it flips the usual dystopian future vision on its head, too, which is perfect. and omfg i'm beyond excited/overwhelmed to get into what he's seen and stuff. i'm sure it all became one big blur of baguettes and croissants until recently!

LOL good, good. gfdjgdh omg didi, why are you so perfect. eti will love dressing him and will always say 'you aren't wearing it as well as i would, but you still look faaabuloooous' AND THAT IS A BIG COMPLIMENT OKAY, DIDI. and if didi isn't like 'dude, you nasty' when he turns monstrous he'll love him even more. meanwhile, can i go ahead and add you? i'll put up a post soon for ~battlers plot discussion and we can rant more there or work out more details! and belatedly but i'm lou :D hi!
